Fishing Game

  Who wants to go fishing?
These are the fishing game pieces I bought from Wish.com. I'm going to have the primary children fish for something related to the song we're learning. For example, my primary children will fish for words (junior primary) or melody map pieces (senior primary) to finish our melody map for "The Lord Gave Me a Temple" later in July.

You could use these fishing pieces around Father's Day, any Sunday during the summertime, or even change it up to ICE FISHING during the wintertime!

Have you done something similar? I'd love to hear from you!

Puppets "Sing-A-Wrong"

PUPPETS!!!

Left to right: Shy Sara, New Kid Nolan, Bored Bob, Debbie Downer

Left to right: Too Cool Tony, Chatty Cathy, Know-It-All Nate, Irreverent Irene

Puppets in Primary Sing-A-Wrong to "Faith" featuring Shy Sara

What I did:
  • I introduced Shy Sara to primary after I quickly and silently set up. The kids were highly intrigued as I'm a very vocal, excited person.
  • Several times I had Sara whisper into my ear, stare at primary kids, conduct the music, hide if the kids weren't singing loudly or well enough, and appear if they sang louder and better.
  • Here are the words Sara sang wrong.
What went right:
  • Junior primary loved it! They helped Shy Sara overcome her fear of singing in public because she mispronounced the words to due to two missing front teeth.
  • Junior primary thought she was cool when she conducted the song with her hands.
  • Junior primary learned the entire first verse to help Sara come out from behind the stand when she was too shy to sing.
What went wrong:
  • Senior primary didn't respond as well as junior primary. Maybe there is an actual ventriloquist in the ward??
  • Senior primary learned the first verse, too, but got really hung up on all the "wrong" words.
Overall, it was a great learning experience. Do you have any questions for me?

"Cut the Tie" Activity

SOOOOOO many people have posted about the Cut the Tie activity to learn a song that I had to try it out!

Here are some photos of the spouse-volunteered brethren and the tie-cutting ceremonies:

Yes, I held hostage the tie pieces from junior primary for "fair warning" to the two brethren and Bishop coming in for senior primary! :D

Here is what I did right:
  • The kids sang great! Their energy and enthusiasm were contagious.
  • I came prepared with 3 volunteers each for junior and senior primary, in case 1-2 couldn't make it or forgot.
  • Each of the brethren got their ties cut, and we got through the song "Fathers" enough times for the kids to feel comfortable singing during Sacrament Meeting.

Here is what didn't go so well:
  • The kids quickly became irreverent. I had to curb their enthusiasm slightly by reminding them that we were still in church.
  • Scissors. I cannot emphasize this enough: HAVE A GREAT PAIR OF SHARP FABRIC SCISSORS. I brought 3 pairs of scissors, but they were dull or non-fabric scissors.

Here is what I'll do differently next time:
  • The kids will use a sharpie/pen/highlighter to draw a line on the tie, and the chosen brother sill have to cut his own tie!
  • The chosen brother will stand up when cutting his tie so everyone can see (back and furthest rows had a slight difficulty seeing the cutting at an angle).
Overall, it was a roaring success, and I'm so glad this idea was mentioned on the LDS Primary Choristers' Facebook group page.
