Primary Program - A Success in So Many Ways...

I am so proud of my little singers!!! They sang so well, knew the words, and brought their parents to tears. :) The primary even sang better than the congregation during "Praise to the Man"! And all the kids wanted to sing during Singing Time guessed it..."Praise to the Man"!

We spent Singing Time having fun: singing songs of every season, songs about Jesus, fun and active songs, reverent songs, etc. We played the Trick or Treat or Share Halloween version of Sing or Dare. THEY LOVED IT!

The biggest success for me was hearing the kids exactly how they sing for the first time, after the success of my eardrum surgery. What a wonderful experience for me... <3

And look at how sweet my son's CTR 7 class is:

How was your program? Things you'll do the same or differently? What did you do for Singing Time?

Bubble gum, Bubble gum, In a Dish...

Colleen Kelley Woodbury is in the LDS Primary Chorister's Facebook group and posted something about a Super Singing machine using Skittles. I don't have the woodworking talent to build one, and my super amazing woodworking mom (also a previous primary music leader) is in Texas, so I turned to good ol' Amazon and found a bubble gum machine! :)

I'm using this for Singing Time for the next several weeks via different activities. For example, on October 30th, we'll be playing Trick, Treat, or Share, and some of the cards will allow the primary child to get a gumball. The color of the gumball will determine which song we'll sing.

I found the bubble gum pieces for this machine on Amazon, too! I've been teasing the kids with this machine for 2 weeks, so they're super excited for this activity! :D

Sing or Dare: Halloween edition

If you don't want to do a costume-themed Singing Time but still want some fun while singing, have you tried Sing or Dare: Halloween edition?

Danielle Gilmore posted on the LDS Primary Chorister's Facebook group page a great idea called "Trick or Sing," the Halloween version of the fun "Sing or Dare" activity.

Maybe someone has beat me to this idea, but I changed it up a little bit to "Trick, Treat, or Share":

  • There will be 3 types of paper slips in a Halloween bucket at the front of the primary room: trick, treat, or share.
  • A "trick" paper means the primary does a "trick" while singing a song, e.g. standing on one foot, holding their tongue, closing their eyes, singing in the dark, etc.
  • A "treat" paper allows the primary children who pulled the "treat" paper to press down on the top of the gumball machine to get a random bubble gum piece. Each color of bubble gum piece signifies something different.
    • red--active/fun song
    • yellow--summer song
    • blue--reverent song
    • green--spring song
    • orange--fall song
    • purple--song about Jesus
    • white--winter song
    • pink--song of choice
  • A "share" paper allows the primary child who pulled the "share" paper to pick how to share a song.
    • girls sing to boys
    • boys sing to girls
    • children sing to teachers
    • teachers sing to children
    • a capella (sing to pianist)
The activity is finished when all cards are used, all the children have had a turn, or Singing Time is over. :)

General Conference - diamonds and pebbles

If you missed General Conference the first weekend of October, the 1st and 2nd, 2016, here is quick link to all the talks and music: General Conference, Oct 2016

Pres. Uchtdorf

  • "Considering all of this, how could it ever be possible that we of all people would not be excited about attending our Church worship services? Or get tired of reading the holy scriptures? I suppose this could be possible only if our hearts were past feeling to experience gratitude and awe for the sacred and sublime gifts God has granted us. Life-changing truths are before our eyes and at our fingertips, but sometimes we sleepwalk on the path of discipleship. Too often we let ourselves be distracted by the imperfections of our fellow members instead of following the example of our Master. We tread a path covered with diamonds, but we can scarcely distinguish them from ordinary pebbles."

What a powerful message! We are each diamonds in our callings: the children can see it, but can you? Some of you mention older kids not listening. Perhaps they see how bright your diamond shines and are put-off because they see themselves only as a pebble. Perhaps they feel your diamond is showing off. Perhaps they just don't like diamonds right now and want to play in the rocks. Our job is to set an example through music, songs that uplift and polish our pebbles into diamonds, songs that open our eyes to the path of diamonds before us.
Pres. Nelson

  • "'None but saints can be happy under every circumstance.' That’s it! Saints can be happy under every circumstance. We can feel joy even while having a bad day, a bad week, or even a bad year! My dear brothers and sisters, the joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives."

If we make finding diamonds - put to music ;) - the focus of our calling, perhaps we will be more "succcessful," as in the Spirit will be present more, the children will heed more, they will learn more, WE will learn more, and together we can all polish ourselves into diamonds while lifting up the pebbles until they have the strength to do it themselves.

Let us sing songs of praise, gratitude, love, struggle, endurance, tribulation and victory, and happiness to our Heavenly Father. <3
